Nearly August

The months of July and August, in Arkansas, are almost always brutal. Heat and humidity, plenty of mosquitoes, and the surreal cacaphony from dozens (make that hundreds) of locusts seeking mates...... ever notice how much hotter that sound can make it seem?

But there is always something blooming to cheer us up. In response to recent rains, these 'surprise lilies' have popped up--no foliage, only a stem with the flowers. Just lovely.

And then, the houseplants that spend the winter inside are all outdoors enjoying the weather even if I do not. This mango tree has sent up a whole new extension; the bronze-red of the new leaves has now turned to bright green.

The trade-marked WAVE petunias that I tried out a couple of years back made such an impression that I went looking for more.

The color selection was limited, but these have been fun. Petunias are tough little plants, but the Wave variety are still more amazing. They never stop blooming, they continue to spread, and they tolerate really tough conditions. (They'll last through a few frosts, too.) I'm sold on them.

  1. Petunias tough? Sure are! I have some volunteers coming up out of the concrete in my driveway. We have them in hanging baskets outside in summer and they must drop their seeds, which then hibernate in the cracked asphalt and cement. Come summer, here they are.

The crepe myrtle is now in full bloom, and the bee balm is still balming away. Astilbe are just getting started.
