A friend and I made the expedition to the Hendrix College campus to see this:

A little background: Hendrix College has outgrown its original campus, expanding across a busy roadway. After endless and disruptive construction, the city of Conway now has a huge double roundabout with a tunnel beneath it, allowing students to cross to the health and wellness facility and The Village at Hendrix, .www.hendrix.edu/Village/village.aspx.
A tunnel beneath a street does not sound inviting, but this is rather enchanting. A visit to www.janneysound.com is worthwhile. Harmonic Fugue is a permanent installation.
Cool!
ReplyDeleteIn general, you can tell that pedestrian tunnels sounded like a great idea to city planners just after WWII. There are a lot of them in England, and by and large, boy are they spooky.
I wonder if this is similar to the passageway at the Detroit airport that goes between the domestic and international terminals.
ReplyDeleteGail: Janney has done a number of installations, but I do not recall seeing Detroit airport on the list at his website. I imagine others are doing some of this kind of work...
ReplyDeleteMichael: I agree about the pedestrian tunnels, though I did think the toad passageways were sweet.
