Earliest Ever!

Welcome to the month of March!  February was certainly a month of contrasts--big snowstorms closing down the state...followed by balmy days that enticed early blooms.  Here's the surprise that greeted me on February 27th:

By the next day, a little rain and a warm night brought the early shoots to this point....I picked four stalks and prepared them as garnish for our pasta primavera.

Also present:  radish sprouts (in need of thinning.)

And next to the house, the redbud promises early color.

Even for a state in the Mid-South, this is ahead of the expected date for Spring bloom.

  1. (See my older posts) ...Yes, I have a very nice 30' x 4' bed that I planted 5 or 6 years ago--personally mixing compost, sand, and soil to fill in as the Jersey King crowns sent up shoots. It's now fully mature; we'll cut fresh asparagus for about six weeks (eat about a pound a day per person.) Oh, is it ever good!
